Landscape Awards 2011

Each year several owners of residential and commercial property in Fullerton are acknowledged for the attention and maintenance they give to their property's outstanding "front yard" appearance: the view from the street. The goal is to honor those who provide beauty and promote care for the community as a whole and to serve as an example to others, businesses and residents alike. The following were the properties selected in 2011, with each of the owners honored before the Fullerton City Council on June 21, 2011

310 North Adams 

Rebecca & Daniel Solkamans

This property features well-chosen and maintained landscaping that compliments the Spanish bungalow architecture of the house. It’s a family effort with top-notch guidance from Rebecca, who is a certified master gardener; she is assisted by husband Daniel and son, Jacob, who does the weeding.

Here is landscaping that is aptly scaled and placed for a corner property to generate plenty of curb appeal. The home as well as the landscaping is very neat and well maintained.

The front yard is defined by decorative perimeter fencing and varied landscaping for a cottage bungalow house. Hidden from view is a soothing fountain enjoyed by the Garrys and their dog.

Described by the owner as a “Darwinian Garden” -- meaning ever evolving -- the front yard is a well tended with a variety of plantings that makes a colorful appearance for a prominent corner property. Most plants were purchased from sales at Fullerton College and the Fullerton Arboretum.

Special recognition is given to the property owners on the 300 block of N. Adams Avenue for giving the street an exceptional appearance, with all 17 residences fronting the street having well-maintained and complimentary front yards. With a “Leave-It-To-Beaver” type neighborhood with the residences a mix of architectural styles, the beautiful parkway elm trees add a unifying green canopy to the street.

This re-landscaped commercial property enhances the appearance of the commercial corridor along Euclid St. Purchased in 2010, the new owner’s instructions to the gardener has been: “Keep it colorful year round.” The property has been a kaleidoscope of color ever since.

This commercial property exhibits a drought tolerant landscape theme using cacti, succulents and California native plants.  It has a water-saving and conserving irrigation system; rain water run-off from the building is collected in hidden channels in the landscape, which is expected to mature in 3 to 5 years

This retirement community has  extensive landscaping throughout its grounds including a re-designed interior waterscape feature that provides superb visual enjoyment for its residents.  The spectacular “Dancing Waters” show is at 5 p.m., daily.
